Trees in plots

Post by Turkey_neck »

I'm removing the sweetgum and maple in this plot. But do y'all think I should take out the red oak and water oak too? The two white oaks aren't being touched but considering removing the rest. They pull to much moisture and nutrients from the soil and nothing does real well within the root zone.

If it's a big cap red oak, I say leave it. Pour the fertilizer to it early in the year to sweeten the acorns.

This^^^^. I'd never cut down any acorn trees unless it was totally blocking out my view or interfering with my shots....

Since it's in the middle of the plot it gets fertilized several time a year and got a good dose of lime this summer.

I'd leave them also. I'd be willing to give up poor growth around the root zone in exchange for the acorns.

I've still got plenty of acorns with or without them. I may remove the red oak and leave the water. My shooting house has 5 or 6 big white oaks and probably the same amount of water and reds around it. I didn't murder my property like most do. Out of 40 acres I still have 20 in hardwood mix.
