Took me several years and many dollars to learn this lesson. But September is NOT a planting month. September is almost always dry and hot. I'm pretty stubborn, so I learn slow, but eventually I migrated to a midOctober planting and I finally saw the light.

Start Bush hogging after labor day. Then plowing and prepping plots. Planting won't start till October probably.

And that's always a major factor in the schedule as well. I'm spraying the plots now, as I get time. I'll go to bushogging, and some control burns, through September (as I get time) and hopefully be ready to plant in October (as I get time).

Add to that.... The current tropical activity has the potential to alter my schedule drastically.

I’ve always noticed plots planted between the first of October and middle of October seem to end up being the best.

Now these are wheat , oats, and Nelson ryegrass fields. At my old club when we planted mid September in they never seemed to hold and get thick.

So far this has been an unusual September. Actually August and September have seen more rain and milder Temps than usual. I hope it's an indication that winter will be colder and perhaps we'll see an actual winter this year.

On the club I just let go , every year I overseeded 2 fields around the end of October with Nelson rye. I would go back and fertilize it with triple 10 , usually around the first of rifle season.

Those fields held deer at the end of January. I killed one old deer that was full of that Nelson grass. It is very expensive to do but it held deer I think to do 3 acres I had around 200 dollars in it.
